We have come across this fault several times in our workshop however I must give credit where credit is due. The images we have used in this article were sourced from an automotive blog called everythingmechanical. The I30 is a spectacular car with very little in the way of common faults however one such fault that they all seem to have is a very harsh knocking noise that develops within the steering.
Usually this starts just after the vehicle has expired its manufacturers warranty. The fault is in the steering column itself and can be very dangerous as is a worn out plastic gear that in some cases is completely perished.
Worst case this could result in a total loss of steering however we have never seen it get that bad and even the worst ones we have seen, still had sufficient response in the steering.
In our opinion vehicles with this fault should not be able to pass a road worthy inspection. The I30 runs an electric steering system. There is a small plastic gear where the motor mounts to the steering column. Over time this plastic gear perishes. Many shops will simply replace the entire unit with a replacement part and in some cases this is the best course of action.
Reconditioned columns are also available however both these options can be expensive. You can strip the thing apart and replace the faulty part. The steering column and motor need to be removed from the vehicle.
Hyundai recalls 173,000 Sonatas over power-steering problem
It is easier to do this by removing the steering wheel and airbag however its not necessary. Be careful not to spin the wheel and damage the clock spring. Remove the electric motor from the column and you can replace the plastic gear. The part number is KFFF. Reports are Hyundai have no listing for this and will try and sell you a complete shaft, however you can get this part through Kia its basically the same company.
The image shows the old gear with a new one. Clean the old gear parts out and put your new one in. Reassemble and refit it to the vehicle and you are out of trouble. The recall will affect Elantra sedans produced between andas well as to Elantra Touring hatchbacks. The problem is a flaw in the vehicles' electronic power steering system, the technology that makes moving the steering wheel easier. In some cases, a control unit component senses an error in the system and disables that assistance. The malfunction triggers a warning light on the dashboard, and can often be resolved by restarting the vehicle.
According to documents filed by the company, Hyundai initially determined that the problem, which first became apparent inwould not require a safety recall.Hyundai Elantra Problems - Elantra Power Steering - Elantra Pulls to Left - Reviews
The level of force necessary to steer the vehicle without power steering was within compliance standards, and the flaw has not historically been considered a safety defect in the U. But automakers and the NHTSA have come under scrutiny recently for failing to issue safety recalls for defective vehicles, and companies have been issuing voluntary recalls in record numbers. The company will notify owners if their vehicles need to be tested for the defect, and will reimburse owners for the repair.

The company says in government documents that the computer circuit board in the power-steering control unit can become damaged. The company started investigating in March after getting warranty claims. Investigators found the circuit boards could fail over time when exposed to the environment.
The recalled cars were built from Dec. Cars built after that had an improved protective coating over the circuit board. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the control unit at no cost to owners starting May A look back, and ahead, at the latest California business news.

Car dealers are desperate. Does that make it a good time to buy a vehicle online? Showrooms are closed, but many car dealers sell online, with delivery to your door.To date, no injuries or accidents have been recorded in relation to the defect.
The EPS makes it easier to steer the vehicle, determining the level of steering assist required at every turn. An analysis of warranty claims to dealers indicated that the torque sensor diagnostic logic within the EPS system may be vulnerable when the vehicles are started, resulting in an incorrect diagnostic code being set.
This causes the system to default to its manual power steering mode, making it unexpectedly more difficult to steer. The level of difficulty to turn the steering wheel will be greatest at lower speeds, increasing the possibility of a crash. In many cases, drivers are prone to accidents because the event is unexpected and they are unfamiliar with operating the vehicle in its manual steering mode. The recall includesmodel year through Hyundai Elantra vehicles manufactured from June 1, to April 30,and through Elantra Touring models manufactured from November 1, to April 30, Hyundai announced that it will begin notifying owners by certified mail with instructions on how to schedule an appointment at a licensed dealer who will verify the proper orientation of the Electric Power Steering and update the EPS control unit free of charge.

When I turn my car I hear a clicking sound and the steering of the vehicle becomes wobbly.
I have noticed this for the last 3 months but early was only occasional but recently have become more frequent. Happens in slight turns and while street driving. Last time it occurred while parking.
See all problems of the Hyundai Elantra. First the car was in the shop for a week having the steering fixed. A week later and steering is broken again. Steering wheel does not stay in place.
Makes it for a fun drive on the freeway. I hope I get into an accident because of this because then Hyundai might listen to my concerns. When driving at speeds over 45 mph the steering feels as if it "locks" in the center position driving straight. Not that it is stiffer to to turn but "locks' in the center position. You must use more force to get past this "lock" or null position. This is not speed sensitive steering! When using more force to get past the lock position you can tend to over steer, which can be dangerous.
So my car all of a sudden started making a strange popping noise while driving the vehicle. Everytime I would turn my steering wheel at a certain angle the wheel would pop.
As I drove the car it would continue to make this awful noise until one day im driving down the road and it popped and the steering jerked my car out of the lane. Driving home the wheel was rather stiff and I worried constantly about getting in an accident.
My reason for the steering issue is I worry someone will be driving the car and it jerk them into a car coming from the other side of the road which will result in a head on collision.Indeed, the worst problem with the and Hyundai Elantra cars is by far issues involving the steering wheel. Many owners have complained that the steering wheel will suddenly lock up and drivers are unable to turn.
One motorist was unable to avoid hitting a railing and crashed into it causing significant damage to the rear passenger door and tail lights. Fortunately no one was hurt, but no doubt this was a traumatic event and this car needed to be fixed. Another driver had the steering wheel get stuck in the turn position and they were unable to straighten it, but fortunately there were no injuries involved.
There is other problems with the steering in the Hyundai Elantra and it has to do with drifting into other lanes or changing lanes with the slightest movement of the steering wheel.
Several drivers have complained about this problem of the car wandering back and forth as they try to maintain it on a straight pathway on the freeway.
The problem is likened to trying to steer the car on black ice. Other Elantra owners have complained that the steering wheel in their car was not centered and was off to one side.

Driving 2. No warning chime front passenger seat. When driving. See all problems of the Hyundai Santa Fe. For no reason the car will stall and all steering and brake functions are disabled. Happens when stopped or while driving. Car has to be put in park and restarted. Very dangerous situation for my 17 year old daughter. While driving vehicle in motion the steering wheel seems to stick requiring me to exert extra force to "break" it loose in order to keep the car traveling in a straight line.
I know it isn't mechanical stearing like I'm used to but the servo motor seems to prevent me from turning the wheel when I need to correct.Revenge of the fallen rotmg wiki
Very annoying and tiring and could be a safety hazard under the right conditions. Found several other owners on this site who is having the exact same problem. I totally agree that there is definitely something wrong with this electronic drive-by-wire steering mechanism.
Like others have said, please let Hyundai know that there is a problem here. I notice this mostly while driving in city traffic.
I have owned this vehicle for over two years and I'm experiencing the steering issue more and more now. If most drivers are not truly paying attention to there driving and this sticking this will lead to crashes and deaths. Notchy steering, feels like the steering wheel sticks, requiring you to use additional force to turn the wheel. This causes over-correcting with the potential to swerving into other lanes or off the road. Lots of lateral play clicking sound in steering even when not driving.
While driving steering shakes violently. Steering exhibits "stiction" after driving for minutes. This becomes worse as speed is increased. Small movements of the wheel produce no steering effect but resistance is felt. When the resistance is overcome, the result is slight over steer. Under these conditions it is difficult to drive in strait line as constant corrections and re-corrections are required back and forth. The effect is that the steering feels to "freeze" until a minimum break out force is applied, resulting in an overshoot past the intended point.
It is similarly necessary to apply a positive return to center force to return to strait, as the normally present self centering feel is not present for small steering angles. The problem can sometimes be detected after being at rest for a few moments but is not intrusive at slow speed. Have worked with one dealer who performed a sas calibration with no improvement. They claim "cannot reproduce" but spend most effort trying to persuade me that the steering is normal.
Have referred issue to Hyundai consumer affairs who have asked me to work with another dealer - currently waiting for a call back. Going down interstate at 70 miles an hour and car shut off put car in nutral and restarted.

Then the next day driving to work and car cut off again while driving did same and restarted. Went on line and found out this has ben a problem in these cars for years and am afraid for me and my children s lives.
My vehicle applies the brakes while driving on busy roads when nothing is in my path.
